The saying ‘a rainy wedding, a happy marriage’ is well known. Traditionally, rain symbolises fertility, prosperity and good fortune for the future spouses.
But shouldn’t this saying, nowadays, make way for its homophone: ‘an older marriage, a happy marriage’?
Statistics do indeed show that couples are getting married later and later.
The median age at first marriage has been above 30 since 2018 and now stands at 31.6.
At the same time, the number of marriages in Belgium is rising significantly.
According to the latest data published by Statbel, 48,598 marriages were registered in 2024, representing a 4.3 per cent increase compared with the previous year.
A level not seen for nearly 30 years!
The number of divorces, meanwhile, remains relatively stable, leading to a fall in the divorce rate.
So, does a longer marriage mean a happier one?
